This is the other predominant mudra used in Zen style sitting. To create this mudra the left hand grasps the right thumb and the fingers of the right hand enclose the left hand. The clasped hands then rest in your lap. As in the Dhyana mudra, in resting the hands near your centre of gravity the body is able to concentrate on very gentle and subtle levels which aids in both concentrating the mind and balancing toward wholeness. Use a cushion or a blanket to rest your palms upon if you need to raise them to sit at a position that allows your heart centre to remain open and your spine to remain erect. This is a very solid and grounding mudra preferred by the Rinzai school of Zen. It is in Koan study where the use of questions designed to elicit a deeper level of awareness that this mudra is most often used. It can be quite energetic and in the way the hands are clenched in concentration with determination and focus. For our purposes with guided meditation it can be quite purposeful in that the focus this mudra installs helps us to visualize the changes we want to experience in our lives with great focus and determination to succeed.
